Time, energy, and money are all assets, and each person has different amounts of each asset. Those with more time will invest it more than money and vice versa. Everybody ends up investing at least a little money in their home business, even if it’s just to pay for the phone line and internet connection. Invest money in the tools you need to build your business, not in the things that you want because they’re cool. There will be money available for that once you’re up and running well. Be honest with yourself about your current assets and how much of each you’ll need to make your business work.
N is for networking with friends, co-workers, and people you meet through your business. Even “self-made millionaires” work with other people they know or want to know. If you’re starting a home business, you’ll get a lot of help, encouragement, and ideas from making time to talk with people who are walking the same path. There may be business owners’ meetings where you live. You can also use online forums, talk to your team members if you’re doing network marketing, or get to know other internet businesspeople from their blogs. Every business owner has challenges to overcome and will have discouraging days now and then. A supportive network of friends and colleagues will make those times much easier for you. Sometimes you may just need to know that you’re on the right track. Most home business owners overlook this step, and it weakens them over the long haul.
Tip! Cost Factor: Most Entrepreneurs refrain from starting a brick and mortar business or for that matter a Home Based Business (non internet) because of the investment required. In affiliate marketing the set-up cost is negligible with most programs being free to join and the merchant even providing you with the tools, tips and websites.
One more thing before I go, while you W I N your way to success, please pass these ideas along to the people you meet and care about. The path to business success is simple though not always easy. EMPATHY is a Natural Talent, you were born with it and you will never loose it. It can be a blessing or a curse in a home based business. If you develop it, it can make you a Millionaire. Business plans, cash flow projections, marketing analysis, etc. are skills that are needed in a home based business, but they can be learned from a workshops, courses or books. I thought it worth noting that on Thursday, IBM’s shares hit $123.72, their highest price since 2002. The night before, IBM said that its first-quarter profit jumped 26 percent raising its full year outlook accordingly. It was the second strong quarter in a row for IBM. Folks have upgraded IBM with analyst Peter Misek calling the stock “one of the safer investments during a U.S. economic downturn.” I agree 100%, though I would rephrase that a little bit to read, IBM is a very good investment so long as the dollar stays weak. IBM has invested big globally to drive its growth and those contracts are paying in non-dollar currencies. I believe IBM is pretty solid but spectacular earnings growth will be with us only as long as exchange rates stay favorable. When the dollar recovers, IBM will have a tough year because those year to year comparisons won’t be pretty.

There has been talk in a few circles about IBM continuing to acquire security firms. I don’t know very much about this side of the business. I know that it’s a huge source of consulting revenue and an essential component in virtually every contract they bid. That said, I sure hope IBM doesn’t overpay for a stronger foothold into the market. I was a little disappointed that IBM bought Cognos, but I\’m not sure they had any choice. $5B was a tough pill to swallow though. I saw a blog post (seemingly by someone hoping to profit from the sale) about an Israeli company called Check Point.
Until now, the thought on the Street was that Check Point was going to continue as a stand-alone company, but with IBM on the prowl, it may be too much for CEO Gil Schwed to resist. Check Point currently trades at a market cap of $5.53 billion, and an acquisition would certainly come with a much higher price tag. Based on valuation, it would take between $7-8 billion to buy the company. For deep-pocketed IBM, that’s not too high a price. For Schwed, a takeover at that price would be tough to reject, and it would break all records for M&A of an Israeli company.
I think IBM has done a pretty decent job of balancing new acquisitions, integrating past acquisitions and organic top line growth over the past few years. Cognos will likely stretch and test that record because of the sheer size of the pill. The security firms rumored include Check Point, McAfee, Websense and SonicWALL. Websense and sonicwall are $900M and $450M respectively, and IBM has bought firms of that size with alacrity while avoiding investor rumblings. McAfee and Websense are north of $5B, making for (potentially) the largest ever target for big blue. I’m not sure that the time is right for throwing around such coin. Most acquisitions only enrich the acquired and hardly ever benefit the customer. Just slow down IBM. Digest for a little while.

Cicso used to be held up as the best example of a company that was “good” at making acquisitions. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, particularly in the software & services fields where the people are the real asset being acquired. Picking the right target, making sure that the company is more valuable with you than without you, and making sure that things don’t disintegrate after you get them are all tough. Robert Holthausen, who teaches courses on M&A strategy at Wharton was quoted as saying that there have been “hundreds of studies” conducted on the long-term results of mergers and notes that researchers estimate the range for failure is between 50% and 80%. I found a neat blog post holding up IBM as just such a model.
IBM and the Art of Acquisitions from Massachusetts based Xconomy, writes:
It’s a balancing act, but one IBM seems to have mastered, says Mike Weider, founder and CTO of Watchfire, a security company that joined IBM last year. “If you integrate too quickly you smother the fire that made [the acquired company] special,” Weider says. “But if you don’t integrate fast enough then you don’t leverage the synergies. I think IBM has figured out a nice balance between those two things.”
I found the article a nice read, though perhaps a bit slanted toward IBM (though the author maintains that IBM has a particular talent at this so it stands to reason that the article is flattering). Anyhow, my opinion has been that IBM has been growing a little bit too quickly and needed to chew a little more before moving on but maybe I’m off track.
Another quote I found interesting:
But synergies between products don’t mean much if the people who actually make them aren’t happy. So IBM says it puts a lot of thought into the human side of the acquisition equation. “You are acquiring the people—that is the asset in most of these cases,” says Hebner. “The code base, without the people who understand what it does, is not very useful. So we’ve put a much bigger emphasis making sure that the people are happy. We do a lot to make sure that we celebrate the culture of the company coming in. We actually try to assimilate things from them—and IBM has become a much more flexible place because of all these new people.”
I guess I only hear the squeaky wheels, but the feel I get is that in the US, morale is dangerously low. Perhaps that’s not the case in newly acquired divisions… I can’t tell that from my seat. Anyway, it’s worth 5 or 10 minutes.

A .htaccess file resides in the web-root directory of most Linux servers that have Apache installed (which is a majority of the servers online). This .htaccess file is a text file which contains user-defined server configuration settings, which include URL manipulations.
The simplest and most common configuration setting is the redirect. Using this function, you can create pseudo directories and files on your local host that will redirect to other URLs. This can be used to hide (or cloak) affiliate links and manage the file linking structure of your website more efficiently. The syntax is simple:
redirect {local/pseudo location} {destination URL}
Example:

Phew! Tomorrow is finally here and yesterday was a bit wild. After about a month of major hype, the Product Launch Formula finally opened yesterday and the results were nothing more than spectacular, wild, frustrating, and hectic.
For those of you who “participated” in *trying* to join the Product Launch Formula know what I mean. At 11am (exactly), the fun began. I predicted an early start to the buying, but I was wrong. Better to be safe than sorry, though. And I have to admit that they were prompt! At EXACTLY 11am (PST), the site went live…and then it immediately crashed for over 30 minutes. (I guess one of my predictions was right!)
Of course, I was getting a handful of emails from frustrated buyers and I was not even able to check my affiliate stats to figure out what was going on. At the end, there were a bunch of people who stayed with it and got in! There were a group of people who essentially said “f-it” and moved on. And then there were a few who left, and came back only find that it was gone.
I felt a lot of frustration from those who didn’t get in yesterday (as my email is showing me this morning). I also got a lot of excited emails from those who did get in!
Being an internet marketer is all about emotions and as fascinated as I found yesterday’s Product Launch Formula launch, it drained me emotionally. It reminded me when I took that first step into joining Stompernet: So much hope, but a big financial investment (actually, the PLF was relatively cheap).
From the email I received from Jeff this morning, it appears that they are taking a day to “sort out things” and assess the “damage”. For those of you who missed out yesterday, expect one more minor “opening” in the upcoming days. It will be short and quick, but it will fill in all of the holes caused by double charges and invalid card charges.
I won’t be emailing my list on this one, though. I think I have battered them enough over the past few days (and the wave of email bonuses from gurus that appeared over the last 24 hours would cause almost anyone to change email addresses and soon). Those who did buy through my link seem very happy with my bonus offer so far. I know others may have went for some of the other information product bonuses that other marketers were offering. To each their own.

I know, this is two days in a row for blogging, but after reading the article Web World of 24/7 Stress, Writer Blog Till They Drop, I couldn’t help myself. This article (written in the New York Times by Matt Richtel) hypothesizes that full-time blogging is detrimental to your health. It sites the stresses of being isolated at home, the pressure to find or create news constantly, the lack of sleep, the need for traffic quotas and the obsessions of blogging competition.
The article further sites the death of a couple of big name bloggers (and a third major heart attack of another). Anyway, you get the gist. Read the article if you like. But I wanted to chime in here because even though I am not technically a professional or full-time blogger, I AM a full time online marketer working from home with many of the same stresses that a full-time blogger may face.
First question: AM I DYING? Uh…NO. In fact, ever since leaving my corporate job over a year ago, my health (both mentally and physically) have never been better. Yes, there are stresses that come to running any business (whether it is online, a brick-n-mortar store, or running a professional blog). Every day I must fight to win new viewship, retain old visitors and clients, come up with new and fresh content, and I am constantly looking over my shoulder at the competition.
Do I sleep at night? Very well, in fact (well, with the new baby, a little less now, but that is not business related).
Do I feel isolated at home? Sometimes. I can go two or three days without leaving my house. Still, I communicate with internet friends constantly online and I spend more time with my wife and family more than ever before. Plus, with the quarterly seminars or conferences I attend, I find myself getting out MORE than when I was trapped in a cubicle for 48 hours/week.
Do I feel the need to always work? Sometimes, but there is a self-control conflict here that may be the core of this whole article. Everything in moderation in fine, but any addiction can be deadly. If these bloggers lifestyle did in fact kill them (which has not been proven at all, especially since they were not necessarily young men), it would be due to their addiction to blogging and the internet.
But it is unfair to single out bloggers here, because anyone that loves and obsesses over their job can fall into the same black hole. I know plenty of engineers (from my “previous life”) that worked 80 hours per work and it still was not enough. Their blood pressure was high, they drank lots of caffeine, and they slept very little. What about actors? Or store managers? Or architects? Or writers?
Almost every job has stresses. Loving your job is one thing, but obsessing your job is another. I know the feeling with internet marketing because it essentially never stops. There is always more money to be made and there are always others around you trying to steal your spot. And to some degree, this competition makes it that much more fun and addictive. At the same time, it is the individual that must prioritize their life, moderate their actions and make sure they live a well-rounded existance in order to thrive and survive.
I turn off my computer at 5:30pm. I check email two times per day on the weekend, but the rest of the time is for my family. I go to the gym 3 times per week and make it a priority to watch Lost on Thursday nights at 9pm. This is the life I created and I owe it all to my work-at-home career.

The Windy City isn't so windy today. It's just a little breezy. I'm sitting on my deck in my new apartment drinking coffee and writing in my various journals.
Last night, sleeping alone in my new little house with its high ceilings and tall windows, I woke up almost every hour, opening my eyes to take in the open door frame, the quiet rooms beyond, the dresser in the corner. Around 3AM I lay curled against my pillows staring out the bedroom window and realized that I could see the very top blinking tips of the spires on the John Hancock building downtown.
I've been in Chicago for five days now and so far it's been mainly spent unpacking and organizing my new home. On Monday there was a lazy afternoon stroll by that beautiful lake and on Saturday night friends from Los Angeles were in town. We went to the most amazing restaurant, Tango Sur, and then later a group of us ended up sprawled across the big leather bar chairs at the W downtown. It all felt wonderfully normal and relaxed.
I've been trying to be good at keeping my insistent worries at bay, tamping down the threatening stress levels which mainly stem from money and job issues but yesterday, after a day spent job hunting and wiring money into overdrawn bank accounts, I came home and collapsed in a sobbing heap on my bed. I curled up against the pillows and just wept.
And it was a funny sort of crying I realized after a while. Or perhaps the most appropriate kind of crying. Because as I lay there, tears staining my pillow, I realized that I wasn't crying because I was sad or particularly scared or worried. Because I'm not. I'm not sad that I moved here. I don't really miss Los Angeles or my old home. I miss my friends but I know we'll see each other soon and I can always call them. And I'm not even that stressed about the other things. Although money and a job loom transparent right now, I know their edges will sharpen soon enough.
I was simply crying for the enormity of it all. Eventually I picked myself up and drew a warm bath where I soaked for a long time letting all the tension of the past few weeks dissolve and dissipate.
And now here I am, a Wednesday morning, on my deck with my pets and plants and cup of coffee. I have a full day ahead of me with job searching and working on my book and other submissions. I have emails to return and things to unpack, laundry to finish.
Oh, something funny about my new apartment. Below me live a bunch of college guys and they're all very young and sweet and funny and they happen to have the only laundry in the building and it's free but you have to actually go into their aparment and down into their basement to use it. And they don't mind at all. When I hesitated to just walk through their back door (which they never lock) and into their kitchen with my laundry basket they assured me that I would get used to it. And over the course of the evening I kind of did. I tip-toed through their living room several times, always one or two of them sprawled across the couches, playing video games, drinking beer, or passed out snoring softly.
I'm really kind of delighted by this aspect of my new life. There's something so funny and sweet about it all. I'm going to make a big batch of banana chocolate-chip muffins today and I think I'll leave some on their counter the next time I go through with the laundry.
Oh, and I really need to figure out what to do about LIFE IN LA. Any ideas?

My hotel is kind of nice and quiet. My only dinner option is a Steak & Shake just outside on the corner. But that's not too bad, I suppose. I haven't eaten at Steak & Shake in a long time. My Dad and I used to go there a lot in Atlanta when I was growing up and later in high school I often went there late at night with my best friend, Liz.
After my mother's funeral, when I was eighteen, after I'd dutifully and numbly said all there was to say to all the people in attendance at the service, Liz and I hopped in her car and went to Steak & Shake. We sat in a booth together, just the two of us, and we ate a brownie sundae. My mother was dead. There was nothing to say.
Liz's beautiful sister Jen died last weekend. Of cancer. I still haven't been able to wrap my head around it. She was so young and Liz is so young and we're all so young and all these things keep happening...births and deaths and weddings and moves and it all just continues to surge forward with the most horrifyingly beautiful and streaming force. All the same, my heart is breaking for Liz. And any other week I would have been at her side through all of this, just as she has been through all the major events of my life.
I didn't think about too much today, my third day of driving. I just kept winding down the road, my foot hard against the gas pedal, and the day slid by quickly. Every once in a while little thrusts of anxiety about tomorrow would sift through me. I'm nervous about my new city and my new life, nervous that I won't love my apartment as much as my last, or of things being hard for a while.
When I arrived in Rolla this evening it turned out the hotel I had reserved didn't take pets and there was a sudden sinking feeling of trying to find another hotel and then there was a minor backing-the-truck-up in the parking lot fiasco and I almost cried but there was just no point. Instead I took a deep breath, figured out how to get out of the parking lot and found another hotel that accepts pets.
After I lugged everything in, cats and litter pans and laptops and suitcases, I poured a glass of Charles Shaw into a little plastic cup and sat outside on the concrete steps looking out at the sun setting in sheets of gold over the highway and the rolling green forests. I thought about how a year ago I couldn't have handled any of this. I would have probably dissolved into tears at the hotel problem and cried even harder about the truck-backing-up fiasco and then I realized that a year ago I couldn't have even driven across the country by myself in a giant truck with my car and my cats and everything that I own.
Thinking about all of this quelled my anxiety about Chicago. If I can handle all of this, I can certainly keep forging ahead. I can make a new life for myself in this new big city. I'm done crying and being afraid of moving forward. I want to live my life.

I'm writing this from a booth in Jerry's restaurant in Holbrook, AZ. The full moon is hanging low and luminous over the dusky plains of Arizona and I've just order a Bud Light and the Catfish Special.
I left Los Angeles this morning at 7:30 AM. I'm driving a 16 foot moving truck towing my car on a trailer behind. Just me, my two cats, everything I own, and barely enough gas money to get to Chicago and my new life.
I'm so exhausted as I write this. I drove for eleven hours today. It really wasn't too bad. Yesterday I had a minor melt-down about driving the truck with the trailer (a last minute kind of forced decision) but it's really not that bad. And the cats—after an intial hour of constant yowling—have been very good. They are currently hiding under the bedskirts of room 112 and my navy bean soup has just arrived.
My last week in Los Angeles was a whirlwind of packing and friends and stressing out. I don't know what I would have done without all of my incredible friends. All week they showed up to help. Liz and Amber, Timbre and Abby and Lien. Aoife and Brian and Will and Francesca. And Rhonda, always Rhonda. They packed my stuff, labeled boxes with funny names and drawings. They gave me hugs and pep-talks and hooked my car to trailers. They loaded moving trucks impeccably and carted off left-over food.
I will never understand how I've come to be as lucky as I am to have these people in my life.
I've hardly been able to think about my new life in Chicago. Every moment of the last couple of weeks has required such meticulous attention to the present, the list of things I MUST do today, to making sure I'm not taking other cars out as I drive down city streets in my moving truck, not letting the cats make a run for the hotel room door, thinking about my route tomorrow. It's exhausting and strangely zen. I haven't shed a tear over the actual life changes.
I didn't cry saying goodbye to my friends or my favorite client, to my little home or to Venice. I just kept my foot steady on the gas pedal and since there isn't even a rearview mirror, I didn't look back.
There was a moment today, driving through a stretch of pine trees when I felt the anticipation of Autumn, something I haven't experienced in five years. I felt that old sense of September, of Fall, of things starting anew even as they're shifting form.
Tomorrow night I stop in Oklahoma and the next night Missouri. I'll roll into Chicago and my new home on Friday afternoon.
There's more to say, much more. More about being 29 and alone on the road, about changing my life and all the things to come, about letting go of the past and moving forward into my life but my catfish is here and it looks really good.

Saying Goodbye
I have officially begun my last week in Los Angeles. Yesterday I hosted a lovely little farewell brunch at my house and all my favorite people came and the house was filled with laughter and mimosas and embraces and remembrances....
I have officially begun my last week in Los Angeles.
Yesterday I hosted a lovely little farewell brunch at my house and all my favorite people came and the house was filled with laughter and mimosas and embraces and remembrances. Afterwards I went for a swim in the ocean, lying on the beach after, the salt water drying against my skin, my eyes closed to the luminous sky and ocean curving before me.
In the late afternoon I drove down to Orange County for perhaps the last time ever. I wanted to say goodbye to my father and to my time spent here with him. I drove the drive I've driven hundreds of times: the 405 South to the 22 East into Garden Grove. I turned the car onto Golden West Boulevard and then onto Lampson, pulling right into the old condo complex where my father lived for a while and where he died.
It all felt so familiar. Not sad, not even nostalgic, just familiar. I realized how long Southern California has been a part of my life. Long before I ever lived here I used to visit. My Aunt Jean and my grandmother Lulu lived here when I was growing up and often my parents and I would fly out for a week or so. The wide open boulevards and sparkling blue skies seeping into my being at a young age.
I drove around for a while in my Dad's old neighborhood, remembering all the time we'd spent together there. I even drove by his old grocery store and the bank, the Blockbuster where we used to rent movies and the old 1970s library on the corner. I didn't feel sad though, rather I enjoyed the feeling of something familiar, the sense of place and past evoked.
Afterwards I went to my Dad's favorite restaurant, an old windowless steakhouse with leather booths where he knew the bartender and all the waitresses by name and where we used to go whenever I visited him from New York. I sat at the bar by myself and I ordered a vodka martini in honor of my father and in between bites of filet mignon, I wrote him a long letter in my journal.
I told him how grateful I am for my time in California and how grateful I am for how much he loved me. I looked over at the booth where we used to sit together and I remembered his funny, bushy eyebrows and the way he used to laugh with a sparkle in his eye. I thought about how, without him, I would never be this woman, happy and kind and peaceful and young and alone at this old steakhouse in Garden Grove, California.
Driving home on the sun-flooded 405 I knew that my time here has come to a close. I knew suddenly that it was always going to be this way, that I was always going to leave California one warm August morning when I was 29, my foot on the gas pedal as I move forward into the rest of my life.

I apologize for my absence from the blogosphere. I have a very good reason for not blogging. Yesterday was hubby and I’s 19th wedding anniversary. Sunday, the children sent us to an overnight stay in the beautiful city of Gananoque, Ontario. Better known as the “Gateway to the Thousand Islands.”
We didn’t see a lot of the city as our evening was spent in the hotel room. (Insert evil grin here) The jacuzzi was great.
I do have a few photos to share with my faithful readers. Monday, we did some shopping in Kingston, Ontario before coming home.

I bought a case of Nestle Pure Life water last week. Yesterday I was drinking a bottle and thought this tastes like tap water. I decided to call the 1-800 number that Nestle puts on the bottle and ask a rep if their bottled water comes from a spring. One of Nestle service reps confirmed that their bottle water was indeed spring water that comes from Aberfoyle Springs.
It still taste like tap water to me. Those in the US, unfortunately get tap water with Nestle Pure Life. A 2007, Associated Press article read “Pure Life is the only Nestle bottled water that uses public water. Well that’s interesting.
Canadians get bottle spring water that tastes like tap water and Americans get bottled tap water with added minerals.

This is the worst flooding to hit these areas since 1981. An estimated 145 homes were affected by the flooding.
For those who don’t know, Tweed Ontario is located in South Eastern Ontario. It is halfway between Ottawa and Toronto. According to the 2001 Canada Census, Tweed’s population is 1540.

Now the Casulo Mobile Living Furniture project is one fine piece of design! It meets the needs of people who move around regularly (probably half the younger population of cities like Sydney!) and should see the wasteful practice of throwing out cheap temporary furniture that’s too hard to move minimised.
Whilst we love the design and elegance of the execution we’d be keen to know more about the sustainability of the materials (sourcing and toxicity issues for instance). We’d also want answers to our questions on durability as well as full life-cycle (who is responsible for the product after its serviceable life?) before rushing out and ordering one.
Having said that a big Deskimo thumbs up to the designers at the Casulo project for a fantastic prototype design.

This kind of real-time information delivery is vital for the uptake of mixed mobility transport solutions and public transport generally. As we can see in Helsinki if it’s done properly people use it. There’s no reason (other than political) why we can’t do this here in Australia. Clover Moore has proposed her sustainable city vision for Sydney which should include this level of wired transport.
I note with some optimism Chairman Rudd has confirmed his support for a nationwide cities policy of some kind - perhaps this will lead to financial and political will to make it happen here as we are seeing in other cities. Ultimately of course all major cities on Earth will need to run on these types of systems with minimal car use (if any).
This is assuming we have enough energy (read oil!) to support it of course by the time they are implemented.

Actually the conference is a bit broader than that as it will focus on the importance of on-line communications strategies for Public Affairs Professionals and engaging the media in this dynamically evolving multi-user environment. Some damn fine speakers and panelists attending as well so should be a good one, i hope to attend a fair whack of the conference actually it’s that good.
My particular presentation is titled ‘Is your website an effective communications tool?’ in which i will be discussing what we learnt working on the Raise the Bar and Your Rights at Work campaigns (and other campaigns time permitting!)
If you don’t know the Walkley Foundation they are ‘the peak industry body representing Australia’s media and is aimed at supporting and encouraging professional and ethical journalism.’

We just hit the go switch on NewMatilda.com, the independent news analysis site with some of the most progressive and interesting writers working in Australia (or anywhere for that matter!). The site is the product of our Considered Design process, and really shows just what can be achieved when you take the time to understand your client’s business and consider users constantly in the design process.
There’s a lot of smarts under the hood but the site somehow feels so simple to use, a sign of great design in my books. A sophisticated tagging system and editorial controls including algorithm based What’s Hot make the site work well for regular users and fresh browsers alike.

This months, Nett magazine includes an article on Digital Eskimo’s day to day operations as a (hopefully inspiring!) example of how to run a green business. We’ve been dreaming up and implementing a unique set of approaches for years now so as you can imagine we had a bit to say.
The article mentions an initiative we are very excited about which is our decision to buy carbon credits to neutralise the entire footprint of the agency since we began in 2001. We see it as a way to cleanup the mess we’ve left in the atmosphere (albeit while doing mostly sustainable projects!) rather than just offsetting recent or current emissions and we’ll be challenging other companies to do the same.

I stumbled across this well written article by Kristen Le Mesurier on blogging in The Age Innovator archives recently which has a nice clear explanation of what blogging is and why it’s relevant to business.
The article references our blog and specifically makes mention of our willingness to share our successes and failures related to sustainability initiatives in the studio. Like most businesses i think, blogging isn’t always our first priority and we’ve been a bit quiet lately while we focus on client work and evolving our Considered Design methods. The article has definitely inspired me to get our blogging house in order …
We have created a roster for staff to ensure that we share the load, keep it regularly updated and provide a diverse range of voices (Unlike some design agency heads i’m pretty sure it’s not all about me!). We are also adding blogging to staff job descriptions and including it in KPIs to further reinforce the importance sharing our stories has for the company.
You should see a difference as we ramp up the posts and renew our commitment to inspire other organisations and people through our own actions on the road to a sustainable world.

We had an interesting conversation in the igloo recently that triggered an all out lovefest about the uber sustainable and ohh so cool practice of designing built environments utilising old shipping containers. It turns out many of us had a favourite example of the genre and so the list below was created.
One eskimo asked ‘Why shipping containers?!’ (innocently enough). Well, where do you begin? They are the ultimate in adaptive re-use of an existing resource that has significant embodied energy. They require creativity and a serious commitment to good design to use well. They finish up looking hot if done right of course, so much so that we are contemplating their use for our next studio when we leave our current space in Surry Hills.

So B&T recently hosted an evening through Holly at Pearl PR for innovative digital business owners as part of a cover story for their Digital Media magazine. It was an interesting night listening to a range of passionate people talk about their little babies and how they were growing.
The mag is out now so i guess this is how they sell a lot of copies, put a stack of people on the front cover! Less motivated people can read it online on a rather annoying flash magazine simulator.

It was a nice surprise this morning to receive an email from our client at the ACTU, which our alert (but not alarmed!) readers will know commissioned us to create the Your Rights at Work website, to let us know we’d won another award for the site (that makes three!).
This time it was from Labour Start, for Labour Website of the Year. In their words:
“The winner this year is Your Rights at Work (Australia) — a website that contributed enormously to the ouster of the viciously anti-union John Howard government a few weeks ago. Congratulations to the Australian Council of Trade Unions on a great campaign and a great website.”
We were pretty happy with our award tally last year receiving two awards (having not entered any awards ourselves that was pretty good - some agencies have teams of people applying for awards and through sheer effort pick up a few each year, we’re a bit busy doing great work for our clients so tend not to bother).
Though we love the accolades I can’t help but add that the greatest reward of all for us on this project was to know that it played a pivotal role in the resounding defeat of John Howard and his right wing Liberal Party in the recent Federal Election.
